In January 2025, Dr. Lukas Brunner from the Climate Extremes group participated in the interactive teaching program Wir wollen's wissen from the University of Hamburg. The aim of the program is to bring scientists and research into the classrooms of Hamburg. Lukas visited a secondary school (the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium) to give an introduction to Climate Extremes and talk about ongoing research to 22 interested pupils. “I was most impressed by the prior knowledge of processes in the climate system in the class and by how interested all of them were. In some of the discussions they even came up with examples for how extremes might change with climate change that I had not thought of before”, says Lukas. At the end of the interactive 90 minutes, the pupils also had the chance to ask more general questions about the work as a researcher and in academia. Lukas: “I was really impressed by their interest in so many different topics, for example by how my day looks like or how climate research is affected by current Geopolitical developments”.
