In Bonn from 3 to 13 June 2024 the 60th Sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) were held.
Dr. Benjamin Blanz, Postdoc at the FNK, attended the conference as an observer for the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE). He followed different negotiation tracks, participated in a number of side events organized by UN staff, the parties and NGOs, and had the chance to hold talks with negotiators from multiple parties. His impression during the negotiations was that published science was understood, and that there was no doubt that human behavior affects current and future climate. With regard to the production of further scientific output there was, however, disagreement how much future research is asked for and how this research would be funded. The question of funding, i.e. "who pays", was a refrain in all of the negotiation tracks.
