Dr. Benjamin Blanz

Benjamin Blanz studied economics in Hamburg. During his Master's degree, for one semester he additionally studied in Edinburgh, Scotland. During his studies, he focused in particular on environmental economics and climate economics. In his Master's thesis, he investigated ways to reduce the complexity of the climate-economic model MIND used at the Research Unit for Sustainable Environmental Development.

In his doctoral thesis, he investigated the economic drivers of fishing effort, the interaction of fisheries and fish stock dynamics as well as the resulting tipping points and how these can be detected early in time series. He contributed with his research to the NOAH project, which focused on the characterisation of habitats in the North Sea and their environmental status. He is currently investigating tipping points in the socio-ecological system of the North Sea as part of the SeaUseTip project.
