There is currently a call for applications for two PhD positions in the Helmholtz Institute for Climate Service Science (HICSS), starting August 1st, 2025 or thereafter. Both positions are limited to 3 years and jointly supervised by the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) and Prof. Dr. Jana Sillmann, co-chair of the Research Unit Sustainability and Climate Risks (FNK).
The successful PhD candidate for the first position will work in the HICSS project Test4Stress - "Stress-testing future climate-resilient city and neighbourhood concepts". The main tasks will be to analyze regional climate model simulations for Hamburg and Heide, and to develop impactful heatwave scenarios for both places places. Applications are open until June 4th, 2025.
The sucessful PhD candidate for the second position will work in the HICSS project Map4Risk - "Mapping of heat-related systemic risk in cities". The main tasks will be to process and analyze present and future urban climate data for Hamburg from different sources and link this data to quantitative and qualitative data on social risk factors to generate a risk map. Applications are open until June 8th, 2025.
Both projects are part of the new "Trans4Heat - Paths for sustainable transformation to reduce heat-induced systemic risk to critical infrastructure" project cluster at HICSS.
