The Climate Extremes Group of FNK organized an international conference and a workshop from September 22nd to 24th 2025 in Hamburg on the topic of Systemic Risks and Climate Extremes.
Jana Sillmann emphasized in her introduction speech of the Systemic Risks Conference that climate change amplifies many of today’s crises such as rising energy and food prices, social inequality, and resource exploitation.
The interdisciplinary Systemic Risks and Climate Extremes Conference brought together over 100 scientists, practitioners, and students from a wide range of disciplines from around the world to address systemic risks in a polycrisis world. The event provided an opportunity to explore how science and practice can understand systemic risks and develop solutions. International experts discussed global finance flows, food systems, social adaptation strategies, artificial intelligence and how systemic solutions can benefit both climate and broader societal challenges.
The subsequent two-day workshop featured very engaged and inspiring discussions. These were structured around the three pillars “Advancements in Understanding and Modeling of Systemic Risk”, “Interaction Between Natural and Human Systems” as well as “Transitioning from Systemic Risk to Systemic Resilience”. Moreover, the workshop participants identified knowledge and action gaps in interdisciplinary collaboration and explored further steps.
Overall, the events were received as very insightful, inspiring and thought-provoking by the international participants. Key reflections of the conference will be published as a conference proceeding to the IOP Conference Series in the coming months.
