To invest in the protection of biodiversity, 30% of the world's oceans are to be placed under protection by 2030. This was agreed at the World Conference on Nature in Montreal, Canada, in December 2022. Kerstin Jantke, environmental scientist in the Cluster of Excellence for Climate Research CLICCS, was a guest at the NDR’s “Hamburger Hafenreport” and was optimistic about the results: The previous 10% mark has not been reached, but “we have seen very strong efforts in recent years to create new protected areas.”
