Crossing an increasing number of planetary boundaries, rising geo-political tensions, growing inequality, and new technologies, result in the fact that our world today is confronted with numerous interrelated risks. These risks can exacerbate one-another, thereby creating systemic risks that can affect a whole system or potentially face many systems at once. These topics will also be addressed at our upcoming Systemic Risks Conference organized by the Climate Extremes group of the Research Unit Sustainability and Climate Risks.
In the recently published study "A systemic risk assessment methodological framework for the global polycrisis", in which Prof. Jana Sillmann is co-author, a methodological framework for assessing systemic risks in the global polycrisis is presented, and two recent global food and energy systemic crises are assessed.
