The macroMIP organizing team at the Research Group Climate Extremes at FNK (Jana Sillmann, Benjamin Blanz, Arnaz Dholakia, and Vito Avakumović) traveled to Potsdam to present initial results of macroMIP at the Cross-Sectoral CROSS-CASCADE and ISIMIP Workshop 2026 and collaborate with the modelling community on future macroMIP activities. The Workshop served as the main, cross-sectoral ISIMIP workshop and was the first full meeting of the new COST Action CROSS-CASCADE project. It was held 8–12 June 2026 at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
In addition to organizing three sessions dedicated to macroMIP, the team presented the motivation, purpose, and initial results from the s1 round in plenary and working group sessions with the intent to invite cross-sectoral collaborations among the CROSS-CASDE working groups and across ISIMIP sectors. macroMIP was established as a member of CROSS-CASCADE working group 2 and as an ISIMIP sector in development.
The sessions organized around macroMIP centered around presenting and discussing results from the initial round of experiments (s1), organizing the drafting of the paper documenting these results and the development of the next round of experiments, based on ISIMIP outputs. The initial set of macroMIP experiments involved nine participating modelling groups from seven countries running 13 models. Discussions of the results delved into relationships between model structures, assumptions, and outcomes driving differences in model responses to the common experimental forcings. The protocol development session of macroMIP focused on designing the next round of experiments driven by ISIMIP outputs and translating these outputs for use in macro models. It also covered lessons learned from the s1 round, and efforts toward better harmonization across modelling approaches.
